Reaching Uninsured Children Through Oregon Public Schools

Health Insurance for Children

Since 2004 Kaiser Foundation Health Plans of the Northwest has offered free health care to children in Multnomah County. Coverage is targeted to students in public schools who are in kindergarten through 6th grade. Coverage extends to eligible siblings from age 3 through 12th grade. Parents are not covered. The child must not be enrolled in any other health insurance, public or private. Kaiser pays for the monthly premiums as well as covers the health care itself. While premiums are covered, the family is responsible for paying minimum co-payments.

Unlike other programs, the Kaiser Permanente Child Health Program is open to children who are not US citizens.

The State of Oregon also offers several free and low-cost insurance programs for children under the age of 19. The programs are government-sponsored programs. Mulnomah ESD Outreach Specialists will help families access these insurance programs and these specialists will help families with the application process.
