Since 2004 Kaiser Foundation Health Plans of the Northwest (KFHPNW) has offered free health care to children in Multnomah County. Coverage is targeted to students in public schools who are in kindergarten through 12th grade.
Coverage extends to eligible siblings starting with those at age 3. Parents are not covered. The child must not be enrolled in any other health insurance, public or private. Kaiser pays for the monthly premiums as well as covers the health care itself. While premiums are covered, the family is responsible for paying minimum co-payments.
Unlike other programs, the Kaiser Permanente Child Health Program is open to children who are not US citizens.
Healthy Kids, Oregon's no-cost and low-cost health coverage program for Oregon kids and teens, is another option for families with uninsured children up to 19 years of age. Multnomah ESD outreach specialists will help families through the application process and answer any questions.
